families who have been forced to migrate to nearby cities.

The Wirikuta territory suffers from a process of natural erosion which leads to loss of its biodiversity.

CHALLENGE

The Wirikuta territory that lies between the Sierra Madre Oriental and the Zacatecas is affected not only by natural erosion, but also by the commercial agro-industry, industrial farms, wind plants and the lurking of the mining industry. These commercial invasions threaten the livelihood of the Wixárika people and ignore and diminish the importance of the cosmogonic dialogue that the Wixárika people establish with the semi-desert ecosystem. For the Wixárika people, each and every natural element in this territory is an extension of their spirituality.

SOLUTION

Creating a large center for environmental regeneration and optimal living practices in Wirikuta, provides the resources to implement reforestation, bioconstruction, agroforestry, environmental tourism and a botanical garden. These efforts are designed to restore the biodiversity of the territory in harmony with their ancient and contemporary practices that will help sustain their livelihoods and allow the spiritual practices to continue for many more generations.

LONG-TERM IMPACT

San Luis Potosi, Mexico

This project’s goal is to care for nature as a whole and to produce food in harmony with the ancient and contemporary practices of the Wixárika people. By keeping the project close to academic centers and communities, the benefits can spread quickly throughout the 140,000 hectares of the protected natural area and beyond. Caring for nature in Wirikuta also supports the economy of the region.
